Music Aptitude Maestros - Web Application

The Background:

AshBea Music provide a range of musical services, from music production, to music theory tuition, to 1:1 tutoring. One of their most popular services is tutoring for children who are approaching their 11+ exams, which includes a Music Aptitude Test (MAT). This test that students take as part of a series of exams to gain entry into their chosen secondary school. The MAT is designed to test areas of musical ability and perception and consists of 60 questions of four types: Pitch, Melody, Texture and Rhythm.

AshBea’s students (age 9-10 years old), were able prepare for their test when they are in a paid-for session with their tutor, 1:1. While this was really beneficial to the tutee, it was not scalable as a business, and could be prohibitive cost-wise for many parents. AshBea approached Bad Dino to help design and develop a subscription based app which allows their students to practice the 11+ music aptitude test, in their own time.

The Solution:

During our initial workshop session, we identified that key to the platform’s success is the ability for children to both practice the test (in sections if they choose to), as well as taking mock tests in a simulated test environment. It was agreed that the UX and UI needed to be very clean, simple and engaging, so that children can navigate the app intuitively, while also creating a creative learning environment for them through visually appealing interface design. 

It was also decided that the platform should be built as a web application to ensure cross-device compatibility. In order to help students build happiness and make the app ‘sticky’, it was also important to implement gamification methods such as streaks, as well as a practice/test history section so that users and their parents can determine their progress over time.

The App:

The app, Music Aptitude Maestros, is now available in the market, and is having tremendous benefits for young people readying themselves for their 11+. The key features are:
