GreenCheck™ - Web App
Bad Dino collaborated with Green Tourism to refresh their GreenCheck™ tool, enhancing usability and resolving technical issues while retaining all key features that help businesses operate more sustainably.
The Background:
Green Tourism, an industry leader in promoting sustainable business practices in the tourism and hospitality sector, approached Bad Dino to enhance their GreenCheck Portal —a unique platform that evaluates and rewards businesses based on their environmental performance. Over the years, GreenCheck had evolved with numerous feature additions, often integrated as quick fixes, leading to a fragmented user experience and technical challenges.
The GreenCheck Portal had become increasingly complex as the tool became more widely used and much more comprehensive Assessment Flows were added as bolt-ons. This approach, while functional, introduced usability issues and disrupted the tool’s recalculation processes, creating ongoing challenges for both Green Tourism and its clients. In short, Green Tourism’s demands of GreenCheck eventually outgrew it’s original capabilities, and so a complete overhaul of the process was required.
The core objective of the project was to optimise the GreenCheck Portal to better support their members in preparation for their Green Tourism Assessment, ensuring that it is intuitive, easy to update and is in line with the organisation's technological advances.
The Solution:
Bad Dino embarked on a Client-Side overhaul of the GreenCheck Portal, focusing on streamlining the user experience without compromising its core functionality. The goal was to refine and simplify it while preserving essential features that drive engagement and results:
- Action Plans: Continue providing actionable steps for businesses to improve their green credentials.
- Assessment Flow: Preserve the robust evaluation process that underpins GreenCheck’s award ratings system.
- League Tables: Maintain competitive insights by comparing businesses based on sustainability scores.
- Awards: A history of past and current GreenCheck awards for businesses to promote their organisation’s environmental commitments.
The App:
The overhaul delivers a more cohesive and intuitive user experience, eliminating technical disruptions and recalculation issues. The platform is designed to provide motivating action plans based on client input, while league tables allow organisations to benchmark their progress against additional sites within their own company. We also rebuilt the entire back-end infrastructure for the GreenCheck team to manage the business operations required of the tool. We also conducted a clean-up of the client’s existing SQL database to normalise the data ahead of migrating it into the new platform.
By upgrading GreenCheck, Bad Dino is helping Green Tourism provide a more seamless, impactful platform that empowers businesses to adopt greener practices efficiently.
Our GreenCheck TM, Portal supports our members to prepare for their Green Tourism Assessment. Ensuring that it is intuitive, easy to update and in line with technological advances is key to our business success. In early 2024 we commissioned Bad Dinosaur to create the latest version. They worked closely with us to acquire a deep understanding of our business needs, using that knowledge to scope, design and deliver the project on time and in budget. Within this they managed a complex data migration process and were on hand almost 24/7 to confidently solve any issues.

"Working with the team at Green Tourism has been a breath of fresh air. They always took onboard our suggestions and collaborated with us closely during the co-design process to ensure the best possible product was built. We're immensely proud of this digital transformation project - taking an old and creaky version of an existing app and completely reinventing it, and bringing it up to speed with modern day Microsoft technologies."
